Season Finale Looming
By Maurice Novelle

Another season is coming to an end and like a good wine it seems that we get better with age. If the weather cooperates next Sunday we'll give it another shot otherwise this will be our last game.

Only a dozen players showed up so we played a round robin. Artie's team came up front 13-9-6. The player of the game was Matt. He crushed the ball and made two outstanding running catches in center field.

On attendance were Little Joe, Roque, Noah, Tony, Artie, Mauricio, Lance, Pedro, John, Matt, Arun and the writer.

Sticks win both games
By Maurice Novelle

As the season approaches  to a closing fifteen diehards made it to the field to enjoy the springtime-like weather.

The Sticks won the opener easily 14-6 in a slugfest. In the nightcap the Joes were ahead by three runs but the Sticks unleashed another walk-off win with Mike W opposite field frozen rope. The writer was the winning pitcher of both games.

In attendance were Manny, Phil, Matsui, Artie, Arun, Little Joe, Big Joe, John, Roque, Matt, Mike W, Chris, Dave, Tony and the writer.

Round Robin
By Maurice Novelle

It was great to be back in action after two consecutive rainouts. Just a baker's dozen made it to the field so we were forced to play a six-inning round robin format game.

The winning team was the writer's squad with another amazing come-from-behind win scoring five runs in their last at bat. Great pitching performance by yours truly to blank Little Joe's side. Big Joe's foursome finished second. The final result was 11-10-0. The player of the game was Matt.

In attendance were Joe Torre, Matt, Lance, Big Joe, John, Noah, Arun, Little Joe, Roque, Mike W, Tony, Kenny and the writer.

We're in the process of collecting next year's field permit fees. Please bring some dough. Thank you!

Joes win two
By Maurice Novelle

The Joes took both ends of today's double header 5-3 and 6-5. The opener was a well played game but the night cap was one heck of a game.

The pivotal hit was Xavier's triple to dead center to stage an impressive come from behind win. Mike W got a big hit with the bases loaded to drive in three runs but was a dead duck at home plate going for the grand slam. Dave and Artie homered, Matt and Manny tripled and Joe Torre flashed the leather again at third.

In attendance today were Noah, Roque, Kenny, Lance, Mike Y, Little Joe, Julio, Mike W, Big Joe, Xavier, Manny, Matt, John, Carl, Artie, Dave B, Mike R, Tony, Joe Torre and the writer.

Just a Round Robin
By Maurice Novelle

Not much to report today except for the improved infield that looked great with the added clay mix.

We were expecting a larger turnout but only thirteen made it to the field so we played a round robin. Little Joe's team finished first with a 9-4-3 score. The player of the game was Joe Torre that made a couple of dazzling defensive plays at third.

In attendance today were Artie, Mauricio, Roque, Carl, Little Joe, Mike Y, John, Mike W, Kenny, Joe Torre, Noah, Lance and the writer.

Joes come back
By Maurice Novelle

After taking a 12-7 pounding on game one, the Joes prevented a sweep with last minute heroics in the night cap by pulling a remarkable come from behind 5-4 win. The momentum switch was generated by a polemical play at home when Nick T, acting as the designated catcher, was unable to hold onto the ball.

We had a great turnout. Super Diablo returned after a DL stint crushing the first pitch he saw, an opposite field blast. Great pitching performance by the writer who tossed seven shutout innings while striking out four batters.

Before the game we paused to remember and reflect on the 9/11 terrorist attacks fifteen years ago.

On attendance today were Noah, Nick T, Mauricio, Matt, Mike W, Little Joe, Todd, Tony, Big Joe, Arum, Joe T, Manny, John, Roque, Mike Y, Artie, Dave B, Xavier and the writer.

Joes wins 7-4 against Sticks
By Maurice Novelle

As expected it was a bit breezy this morning due to tropical storm Hermine still churning offshore. We were ready to get underway with a round robin game but Roque arrived just in time to assemble two seven-player squads instead.

The player of the game was Matt who made an outstanding catch in deep center and blasted a solo shot. Noah had a nice day at the plate with a bunch of hits and Mike the Wolf flashed the leather at third and second with a pair of dazzling plays.

In attendance today were Noah, Roque, Kenny, Nick, Big Joe, Xavier, Mike W, Joe T, Matt, Phil, Jay, Lance, Tony and the writer.

A Day of Food and Fun
By Maurice Novelle

We hosted our seventh annual barbecue. We had a great time. There was plenty of thirst quenching drinks and terrific food from delicious empanadas to gourmet salads, burgers, hotdogs and sausages.  Check our facebook page with lots of photos.

Weather-wise it was a typical dog day of August, hot and humid, so we agreed to play only a six-inning game.

The Bazooka Joes after loading the bases would jump on the scoreboard right away and following John's mammoth blast they were already ahead 10-3 on the top of the fifth and seemed destined to capture an effortless victory. But the resilient Mozzarella Sticks refused to raise the white flag by staging a most impressive come from behind win.

The Sticks would score six runs in the bottom of the inning with Artie's long homer  to close up the gap and make it a one run deficit.  Then in their last at bat with two outs and two men on base they would score the tying and winning runs with Noah's dramatic line drive clutch hit just out of reach of lunging third baseman Pedro to drive in Artie and Todd to cap off an awesome and thrilling game. Final score 11-10.

On attendance were Mike W, John, Kenny, Pedro, Lance, Tony, Little Joe, Noah, Roque, Jay, Artie, Todd, Big Joe, Mike Photoman (didn't play... just chilled out) and the writer.

Game rained out
By Maurice Novelle

A lot of guys were on vacation so we had a low turnout today. We ended up playing a round robin. Jeff's team came out with the win 11-7-4. In attendance were Lance, John, Pete A, Adam, Jeff, Mike W, Tony, Roque, Eitan, Kenny, Arum and the writer.

Next week is our annual barbecue and like Lidia Bastianich would say Tutti a tavola a mangiare!  Please contact Big Joe at joecoach320@yahoo.com to know what to bring.

The Sun was Hot... the Bats were Hotter!
By Little Joe Marra

Someone remarked before the game how there were very few balls hit into the trees last week. Not so this week. You can tell by the score. The Bazooka Joes defeated the Mozzarella Sticks 26-17 with Big Joe out dueling Jeff. Yes, you read that correctly. Two six inning games were planned originally but the innings were so long that we had to settle on one seven inning game. Lots of crooked numbers on the scoreboard.

There were some typical Windsor Park misplays and errors of course but there was also an awful lot of heavy hitting. Dave B and Xavier both hit two-run bombs deep to right center. Eitan, Mike W and Sergio all had big triples and there were lots of doubles from both teams as well. Recognition should go to Dave's twelve year old daughter, Alyssa. She filled out the squad ably playing second base and hit and ran the bases very well. It's nice to see a youngster who knows the fundamentals.

Today's attendees: Big Joe, Matt,John, Mike W, Eitan, Sergio, Alec, Jeff, Roque, Nick, Phil, Dave B, Xavier, Alyssa, Artie (subbing for Mo as the Sticks captain) and yours truly Little Joe.

Sticks top Joes in nine-inning thriller
By Maurice Novelle

It was scorching hot today. A few guys could only stay for one game so we decided to play a single nine inning. In a even keeled affair the Mozzarella Sticks edged the Bazooka Joes  8-7 to walk away with the victory.

In the top of the ninth the Joes tried to stage a last minute comeback. They took advantage of a couple of defensive miscues by the Sticks to load the bases with one out but their offense failed to manufacture the tying run. Jeff was the winner pitcher and the writer who pitched the last three innings in relief recorded the save.

In attendance today were Big Joe, Noah, Roque, Kenny, Lawman, Eric, Jay, Little Joe, Arum, Alec, Jeff, Nick T, Matt, Mike W, Artie, Todd, Tony, Peter A and the writer.

Our annual barbecue is scheduled for August 14. Please contact Big Joe at joecoach320@yahoo.com to know what to bring.

A Farewell to Russ...
By Maurice Novelle

Wishing "Bad Boy" Russell the best as he begins a new chapter in his life, may it be full of joy and success. We will miss you very much... good luck dear friend!

The Bazooka Joes split another doubleheader versus the Mozzarella Sticks. The Joes won game one of today's twin bill against the Sticks 13-7 before falling in the night cap 5-4. The player of the game was Alec that blasted a legit two-run homer. What a bomb!

Game two initially concluded with the runner going to third being tagged out. The play generated  some controversy whether the run should count or not. The game was resumed and the correct ruling was made because when the third out is not the result of a force-out the run counts. Good job!

In attendance today were Noah, Kenny, Artie, Dave B, Russ, Mike Photo-man, Little Joe, Sava, Lance, John, Matt, Todd, Alec, Pete A, Big Joe, Tony, Eitan and the writer.

Another split doubleheader
By Maurice Novelle

As expected due to the long holiday weekend attendance was moderate but we managed to assemble two full squads and avoided playing a round robin setup. In the absence of Little Joe, Artie assumed as the skipper and pitched for the Joes that took game one 12-5. The Sticks returned the favor winning the night cap 10-3.

The player of the game was Dave B that put on an awesome display of power blasting a couple of long balls, a triple and a grand salami. Nick T had also a good day at the plate. Defensively Tony surprised everyone with his unorthodox fielding technique at second base making two brilliant catches and initiating and turning a flawless 4-6-3 double play.

In attendance today were Roque, Kenny, Brian, Eric, Lance, Mike W, Artie, Peter A, Tony, Nick T, Matt, Noah, Lawman, Todd, Dave B and the writer.

One game a piece
By Maurice Novelle

It was a gorgeous morning to play ball and we had a terrific turnout.  In game one the Sticks managed to squeeze out a 3-2 victory over the Joes. It was a heck of a game with brilliant pitching performances by Jeff and Juan and solid defense by both squads. Todd was the defensive player of the game flashing the leather and displaying excellent range at second making three awesome circus catches.

The Joes took the night cap 9-7 after the Sticks staged a last minute rally scoring five runs but falling short.

In attendance today were Jeff, Noah, Roque, Kenny, Artie, Todd, Dave B, Arun, Sergio, Big Joe, Tony, Juan, Nick, Matt, John, Mike W, Pedro, Alec, Xavier, Little Joe, Ray, Peter A, Michael L, Mohamed and the writer.

Joes Return Favor and Sweep Doubleheader
By Maurice Novelle

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

The Bazooka Joes took both ends of today's twin bill 4-2 and 19-3 respectively. Game one except for a couple of miscues was a well played game. Game two... it was just atrocious! The Mozzarella Sticks suffered a meltdown of major proportions. Like they say, losing is not the end of the world, anyone can have a bad day or the other team is more talented on the field. However, as long as you compete and give a hundred percent there's no shame on losing, but losing from a lack of effort that is absolutely unacceptable. It's all about practicing good sportsmanship and handling both victory and defeat with grace, style and dignity. Got it!

In attendance today were Jeff (pitched well gain), Noah, Kenny (gets on base no matter what), Lawman (nice opposite field frozen rope), Artie (player of the game), Xavier, Peter A (impressive hitting), Little Joe, Big Joe, Roque, John (crushed the ball), Mike W, Todd, Sergio (played great outfield), Dave B, Efrain and the writer.

Sticks Sweep Again
By Maurice Novelle

Only two months into the season and we had four rainouts already. The wet weather had a significant impact so far, the outfield dimensions were drastically reduced by the overgrown shrubbery and weeds and the infield soil gets saturated quickly due to its excessive clay content and poor drainage. Today for instance we had to deal with a massive puddle around second and first bases. We skipped batting practice and played two five-inning games.
The Mozzarella Sticks took both ends of today's doubleheader 4-2 and 8-6. Game one was even-keeled. Great pitching match-up head to head. Jeff was lights out again but Juan experienced some control problems and walked several batters. Lawman and Alec generated the power and carried the big bats.
Little Joe and the writer pitched game two. After escaping a bases loaded no-outs jam the Joes took advantage of a pair of misplayed balls to jump out to an early 3-0 lead but the Sticks didn't surrender and scored five runs in the next inning. The defensive play of the game was Arun's outstanding running catch in right field.
In attendance today were Juan, Manny, Roque, Lawman. Mike W, Arun, Dave B, Little Joe, Jeff, John, Noah, Kenny, Todd, Alec, Xavier, newcomers Michael L and Peter A, and the writer.

Sticks strike late to sweep twin bill
By Maurice Novelle

In the absence of Little Joe, Artie took over captain's duties yesterday. We couldn't ask for better weather and we had a tremendous turnout.

The Mozzarella Sticks took both ends of the doubleheader 9-1 and 6-4 respectively.  Game one was an easy win for the Sticks. Jeff outdueled fellow ace Big Joe on the mound with a brilliant pitching performance and solid team defense.

In game two, lefty junk artist Artie faced flamethrower Juan. The Bazooka Joes were not intimidated by Juan's fastball velocity and Roque loved the challenge smashing a couple of frozen ropes. The Joes found themselves comfortably ahead 4-0 and Artie was piling zeros on the scoreboard but the Sticks staged a dramatic come-from-behind victory to take the night cap.

In attendance were Manny, Brian, Phil, Kenny, Jeff, Todd, Pedro, Juan, Mike W, Lance, Haaj, Mike R, Photoman, Roque, Matsui, Chris, John, Noah, Eitan, Mike Y, Artie, Big Joe, Jay, Arun and the writer.

While we're enjoying our three-day Memorial Day holiday weekend let's reflect and pay special tribute to those who made the greatest sacrifice for our freedom. God bless America!

Joes Prevail Again
By Maurice Novelle

After consecutive rainouts everyone was glad to be back in the field. Meanwhile the Joes continued on their early season tear by clobbering the Sticks 20-10 and 10-8 respectively to take both ends of today's twin bill.

Game one resembled a batting practice session. The Bazooka Joes lineup put on an impressive power display by hitting line drive after line drive. The Mozzarella Stick's defense was horrendous and the blunders and misplays kept piling up in probably one of the worst lackluster performances ever. The mercy rule was enforced after three innings of play to put an end to the slaughter.

In attendance today were Nick, Matt, John, Lawman, Kenny, Little Joe, Mike W, Chris, Todd, Mike R, Pedro, Rob, Manny, Brian, Phil, Noah, Efrain, Sergio, Big Joe, Arum, Xavier, Roque and the writer.

It’s Joes' time!
By Maurice Novelle

The Joes take both ends of today’s doubleheader 15-10 and 5-4 behind a superb pitching performance by Little Joe that managed to keep Sticks’ sluggers at bay. The defensive player of the game was Matt who made two awesome running catches in center field to rob Xavier first and Nick later with the bases loaded. Newcomer Brian had a good day at the plate hitting frozen rope after frozen rope.

In attendance today were Matsui, Roque, Matt, Kenny, Lawman, Brian, Chris, Sergio, Little Joe, Mike R, Mike W, Nick, Noah, John, Phil, Efrain, Artie, Xavier, Arun, Alec and the writer.

Sticks and Joes split opening day twinbill
By Maurice Novelle

After last week’s rain-out, season nineteenth finally got underway. Everyone seemed upbeat and excited to start playing ball at last. We had a great turnout and a couple of new faces, Xavier and Noah. Rustiness was apparent from the get-go with a series of misplayed grounders going through the wickets of a couple of infielders, however three impressive defensive plays merit mention, Noah’s diving stab at third, Nick’s diving catch in right field and Artie’s running snow cone catch in center field.

In game one the Joes couldn’t take advantage of the Sticks’ defensive fluffs. They loaded the bases three times in a row but came out empty handed. The writer who pitched relatively well managed to escape unharmed. In game two the Joes’ fate changed scoring five runs behind Pedro’s big bat who was the offensive player of the game. The end result, the Mozzarella Sticks won the opener 9-3 and the Bazooka Joes took the nightcap 7-3.

In attendance today were Roque, Nick, Lawman, Efrain, Artie, Little Joe, Mike R, Big Joe, Pedro, Mike W, Manny, John, Kenny, Noah, Arun, Xavier, Pete W, Rob and the writer.

Game Rained out
By Maurice Novelle

Tomorrow’s weather forecast doesn’t look good at all. It’s going to be unseasonably cold, brisk and chilly. At game time the temperature will hover in the low 30’s and a wintry mix of snow and rain is expected for tonight so the field won’t be in optimal condition to play, it might be a bit treacherous. We’ve decided to be prudent and call the game off. Opening day is then rescheduled for the following Sunday, April 17.
